A drinking and driving
youth program created by
Patricia Manduca for the
Okanagan area in 1978
caught the attention of the
attorney general’s office at
which time was starting the
Counterattack program in

. conjunction with ICBC.

Manduca was asked to
assist. The job eventually led
to forming a department and
a concept that would address
all traffic safety issues in one

effort. As simple as it sound-
ed, it had never been done
before anywhere throughout
North America.

When Manduca, 40,
started studying traffic safe-
ty issues there were no
models to follow, only
fragments of programs, she
said. “If there were, there
would have been no point
re-inventing the wheel."’

Already she is seeing ef-
fective results. In less than
three years, B.C. has an 80
Per cent seat belt wearing rate
which is the highest in North
America,

Fed up with fighting for
architectural contracts,
Haynes, 38, decided to offer
a computer drafting service
which would do the ‘‘dirty
work’’ of blueprint drawings

After investing $150,000
and months of work, the
idea flopped. At that time,
the present state of the art

suited for his purpose. So
Haynes set out to invent his
own.

Eventually, he said, his
concept developed into an
electronic drafting board
that utilizes traditional draf-
ting methods but ‘‘takes ad-
vantage of the electronic ca-
pabilitics of computers and a
large flat screen that looks
like a light table.’’

Unlike the Hollywood ste-
reotype of the wacky inven-
tor such as ‘Doc’’ in this
summer's hit movie, Back to
the Future, these individuals
seem very much like every-

Manduca doesn’t class
herself as an inventor, as she
says, ‘‘! can’t even invent
dinner,’’ but she is creative.

Haynes says having an
“extraterrestrial’’ viewpoint
is part of the inventor's
genius. ‘“‘In my mind’s eye, I
see the earth as this little
thing spinning and 1 sce

myself sitting here, inside the
city.”

Once in grade school his
geography teacher asked the
class to draw a picture of
Stanley Park. While most of
the class took the conven-
tional approach of drawing
it from a northerly perspec-
tive, Haynes drew his from
the North Shore looking
south.

The creative process that
Haynes speaks of has a lot
to do with a knack of visual-
izing things differently and
being bullheaded enough to
see the project through.
