2 - Friday, August 23, 1985 - North Shore News Brothers plead guilty to sex assault TWO NORTH Vancouver brothers pleaded guil- ty to sexual assault charges Tuesday. Aged 21 and 23, the two men appeared before North Vancouver provincial court Judge J.K. Shaw charged with a total of eight counts of sexual assault involving their younger sister. The charges resulted from a series of incidents that allegedly occurred between September 26, 1978 and March 19, 1981 and further between November 5, 1980 and June 30, 1983. A court ban has been placed on publication of any . information that might lead. to the identity of the victim including the names of both accused and victim. In her.opening statement at Tuesday’s pre-sentence hearing,..Crown Prosecutor Jean Connor told the court that the only thing at issue in the case was whether. vio- lence had been involved in any of the assaults, AGORAPHOBIC. _ She said the complainant had left school.in:1978 and had returned only sporadically since, leaving her with a_ grade-eight education. The condition has left the complainant virtually housebound since October 1982. Testifying against the two accused, the complainant told the court she had engaged in sexual activities with the younger of her two brothers as early as 1976, when the two were 10 and 12-years-old respectively. She told the court she had submitted to her brother because she had been frightened of possible physi- cal abuse. Although. many of the sexual assaults took place in the family .home while- either or both parents were in other parts of the house, the complainant testified she had not tofd either about the assaults until she was 14- years-old. ASSAULTED - By that time, she says, she was also being assaulted by her other, older brother.
