SPECIAL maps being produced by the geography
department at Simon Fraser University could make
life more enjoyable for sight-impaired people who
visit or live in the Lower Mainland.

The maps, of Stanley
Park, and the King Edward
campus of Vancouver Com-
unity College are the work
of graduate student Simon
Trevalyan and were made
possible by grants from the
Rotary and Kiwanis clubs of
Vancouver. The Bayshore
Hotel has also contracted
Trevalyan to produce 1,000
maps of the hotel’s floor-

plans for use by sight-
impaired guests.
Trevalyan uses different

techniques to make the tactile

maps. The Bayshore maps,
for example, were made with
a thermo-engraving process.
Trevalyan explains that a
special adhesive powder,
when applied to paper and
heated, melts and expands to
yield braille-like ridges which
sight-impaired people can
trace with their fingers.

The maps of the VCC cam-
pus and Stanley Park are less
expensive to produce using a
process known as vacuum
forming. ‘‘A thin sheet of
clear plastic is heated and

then sucked down onto a
master mould. When cooled
a permanent impression of
various symbols and braille
coding remains.’’ Trevalyan
says these tgctile maps will be
clear so they can be placed on
top of- regular maps and
utilized by people with partial
vision or by sighted people
who may accompany a blind
user.

He adds that the maps of
Stanley Park will be produc-
ed in kit form, consisting of
an audio tape, six tactile
maps and six visual maps.
