Even getting an extra $1,000 out of your house should not be looked at light- ly. Remember that $1,000 is tax-free. And how long does it take to save $1,000? The average Canadian saves about 10 per cent of his earn- ings. That means you will have to earn an extra $15,000 before-tax just to get back that $1,000. So just figure out how much extra work is required by you at the office. So investing a little extra time to get that extra equity out of your house is probably a better use of your time than anything else you could do. ... setting a price WHEN THINKING of selling your home, you have to know the marketplace first, before you can look at your own property. Remember that people will consider the value that your house offers against other properties listed for sale. So where do you get this information? Start with a real estate salesperson. They work on commission and they want your listing. This is because real estate markets are very localized. Even within major cities there can be strong and weak segments. So how do we measure supply? While it is difficult to esti- mate demand or buyers at any one point in time, there are key indicators that can help.
