A break for junior golfers THE RULE of thumb a: most golf courses in B.C. has always been, ‘‘Sorry, kid, you can’t play golf until you’re 12 years old.”’ Isn’t it about time that idea changed and Junior-Junior golfers in this province got a break? As soon as a kid is old . enough he had the opportuni- ty to learn how to swim, play baseball, soccer or hockey. Why not learn how to play golf at that age as well? If the game of golf is to survive, thousands of kids who otherwise would never touch a club must be exposed to the game. This year the British Col- umbia Professional Golfers’ Association has an answer to this growing crisis in the game. They are introducing a province-wide program for boys and girls, ages four to eleven. The idea is to in- troduce kids to the game of golf at a younger age which in turn would improve and increase the number of players in the game. ‘‘| think it’s excellent,”’ said Point Grey Golf and Country Club’s head profes- sional Wayne Vollmer. ‘‘The future of golf is in our kids, obviously. The sooner we get them interested in the game — the better off they’ll be for it.”’ Another primary objective of the Junior-Junior golf program is to promote access to playing facilities and in- struction for any youngster who wants to play golf. “? think any opportunity for young kids (o take up the game is super,”’ said former B.C. Open Champion Cec Ferguson, who took up the game at the age of nine. ‘‘In other sports kids get the chance to learn the game car. ly but in golf it has always been different. Kids just haven't had the chance "’ With a starting date set for Allied Store Fixtures weicomes the new re- opening of Time Out Sports TIME OUT SPORTS -* 980-8211 960-0116 1199 Lynn Vatloy Road the last weekend in May the program will be held over a five week period.
