Postponing birth

WASHINGTON (UPI) -
After postponmg  child-
beanng to concentrate on
careers, women m_ their
early 30s now have the
nation’s fastest-msimg rate of
first births - up J’ per cent
between 1972 and 1979. the
U.S. government = said
recently.

54,000 m 1970 to 110.000 m
1979, the Nanonal Centre for
Health Siausnucs reported.

First birth rates rose for

women im every age proup
from 25 to 39, but the jump
was biggest for women aged
30-34, said the study,
“Trends im First Births to
Older Mothers.”

The first birth rate for
women m their earty 30s rose
from 7 births per 1,000
women in 1972 to 12.1 m
1979, up 73 per cent.

The first birth rate has
been dropping for teenagers
and women in thet cearty
20s. although their first
births soll outnumber those
of older mothers. More than

1.3 milhon first babies were
bom to women under 30 in
1979.

“lt as evident that large
numbers of women have
postponed marnage and
motherhood to ane un-
precedented extent since...
the 1930s.” said the study by
Stephanie J. Ventura of the
centre's vital statistics
division.

The msing furst birth rate
for women in their 30s is a
direct result of postponing
child-bearing in the 20s
the study said.
