A8 - Sunday, June 13, 1982 - North Shore News Ee mailbox Women die from LEGAL abortions Dear Editor: In pointing out the “fallacy” of Pro-Lifers, that we forget we are sending women to back street abortions, if we try to reduce the rate of L.G.H. abortions, you seem to be unaware that back street abortionists have improved their operations along with everything else in our enlightened age. Drug companies have produced “morning-after” pills and are launching “do-it-yourself” abortion kits, doctors do “menstrual extractions” in their offices and suction curretage is much the same whether legal or illegal. Women do die from legal abortions, they still get infections, bleed, punctured bowels, the cervical muscles are forcibly stretched Crossing guard for duck family Dear Editor: I want to give my sincere thanks to the man who, last week, stopped his car behind mine, got out and stopped the three lanes of murderous traffic for me on the Upper Levels Highway between 1Sth and 21st St. turnoffs. We had to let a mother duck and her two one-day-old ducklings walk off the highway. They did. Doris Orr North Vancouver CUT PERM & CO especially in a_ first pregnancy and subsequent babies are more often premature. In order words, abortion is “un-natural” and has its price. Having written all that, I would like to point out that our concern is not only for the life and health of the mother but also, and equally for the child. Mother and child both have a right to life — neither have a right to Keep out Dear Editor: I sense political ambition as the prime motive of Carruthers and Whelton in harassing Lions Gate Hospital for its abortion policy. Their legalistic objections may gam them publicity, but can only cause needless anxiety to potential termination patients and to the staff of the hsopital. Obviously it will also divert funds and energy from health care to lawyers’ fees. To me the decision about potential terminations in strictly a question for the private relationship between abortion. In Canadian law it is a cmme - except the penalty is removed provided certain rules and procedures have been followed. You state that we con- sistently ignore social and educational probiems. Pro-Life people at Bur- thright are ready 24 hours a day to help in every way any woman with a “problem pregnancy.” I might mention that this community service was refused permission to be im the West Vancouver May Day Parade with other community services. North Shore Pro-Life Society is an educational group with access to world- wide literature from scientists, doctors, lawyers, mother, fathers, teachers, journalists, editors, and handicapped people who have been “allowed” to live. I might mention we have difficulty getting our view Pro Life politics physician and patient. Why even involve a committee in such an intensely personal Situation, unless gross malpractice is suspected? Much as I respect the night of individuals to disagree with abortion on moral grounds, I do not accept their night to impose this view on others. 1 am deeply suspicious of the objections of any in- dividual, male or female, to abortion who has not had first hand experience of the unplanned pregnancy situation either themselves or with an immediate friend Amays wear a Personal Aloatation Deuce Of a Iifeyacket when around the water i Tre ( area Red Cr Oss Some ty NDITI PHwKS & ERI “ neat Eh’ * s t ~ Sg5 “ Our finest quality perm specially priced June 14th to 26th INCLUDES REDKEN CONDELIONING, THEATMENT AND OF COURSE A GREAT Cul HAIR TODAY FINE HAIRSTYLING FOR MEN & WOMEN Park Royal Mall ¢ Lansdowne Mall (North) 922-9308 OPUN WELD Tl’ PM Ga WTA for yous coOnvemicn:e gazes om, SPECIAL $45” 270-1701 or family member.
