TAKING TIME TO ENJOY

Checking out the local sights

Although everyone leaves
home with good intentions to
“take it slow” and “make lots
of stops”, have you ever
noticed how many people
return from ai car trip
boasting about the “good
time they MADE?” Not the
good time they HAD.

What is it that turns a
normal, easy going driver
into an efficiency freak once
he hits the freeways?

We just got back from a
car trip to the interior of
B.C. On the way up I was as
anxious as everyone else to
get to our destination but |
made a mental note of
several stops I'd like to make
on the way back. And, ll
have you know that it almost
caused a divorce in the
family! Have you ever tned
to prowl through a museum
with your husband standing
beside you tapping his foot
and [ooking at his watch?

We did make the three
programmed stops. If you
can get your driver calmed
down enough, Id recom-
mend them.

The O'Keefe Ranch

Located on Highway 97,
west of Vernon. this famous
ranch has been made into a
museum. The old log cabin
home is still there, gently
restored, and its successor, a
mansion built about 1900 is a
treat to visit.

Even though the ranch
was quite a distance from
civilization during the horse
and buggy days, the O'Keefe
family hved in grand style.

The dining room is nothing
short of palatial and the
china, crystal and sterling
are magnificent. There's
quite ai collection’ of
clothing, from tny infant
dresses through wedding
gowns and accessories.

The old coach stop from
the stagecoach days is back
in business again - but not as
a hotel. Madelaine Saunders
and her husband from North
Vancouver have bought the
property and are ousy
restoring the “Manor” as a
free museum, craft shop and
antique store. They've only
just begun but it’s delightful.
The craft shop is open,
selling nothing but hand
made items by B.C. artists.
Next year they hope to have
the antique store in
operation. There are several
rooms full of antique
clothing, china and kitchen
equipment free for the
browsing. Even the coffee
and tea (plus little cookies)
are free - help yourself.
