(UPI wirephoto) Losing tactic failed Elected for second unwanted term FLORENCE, Texas (UPI) - Foy Hayden, the reluctant mayor, didn't have to try to win the election. In fact, he tried to lose. But after the voters of Florence had spoken Saturday, Hayden had been elected to a third mayoral term - although his name wasn't on the ballot - on the strength of 53 unsolicited votes. Forty-one other votes were cast but the runnerup had only four votes. “Il have never sought this job,” Hayden said. “I don’t particularly like it and I don’t particularly want it. I've got a lot of other things I'd rather do. Hayden apparently isn't the only one who does not want to be mayor of Florence's 672 residents. No one filed for the job. Hayden served 14 years on the City Council and when it came time to clect a mayor in 1977, the undeclared Hayden defeated two other candidates who had of- ficially announced for the job. In 1978 he tried to retire but another write-in cam- paign kept him in office “Everybody likes him real well,” said Mrs. H.L Par- sons, the election judge ee . eee tag? “Everybody wanted him. He but nobody else wanted it didn’t want the office at all either.” 5 year term, interest paid annually.
