MAILBOX Sunday, December 30. 1990 - North Shore News - 7 Reader slams fur trade Dedicate Cypress Ridge Deer Editor: I read with great distaste your profile of Constan- tine Pappas in the Sunday, Dec. 2 issue of the News. Elegantly dressed, polished and university educated he may be, as you describe him. But what you failed to tell your readers is that the Pappas family obtain- ed all their wealth from the suffering of millions of animals, whether they be trapped or ranch-raised. Mr. Pappas says that animals raised for the fur industry are treated better than they are in the meat industry. This has got to be one of the most ridicu- lous statements I’ve ever heard. How can he possibly compare anything to the modern day factory farm, which is the most inhumane, cruel and barbaric system devised for mass animal production? Some facts you and your readers might like to know, that I’m sure you would not obtain from Mr. Pappas are: e Every fur coat is made from the skin of between 8-60 animals, depending on the size of the animal. Each animal suffered extreme pain in the process. There is no such thing as a fur coat produced by humane methods. * Animals caught in traps suffer an average of 15 hours, sometimes days of excruciating pain before eventually being clubbed or stomped on to death. Trappers are taught to stand on the animal’s chest and yank the hind legs out, crushing the lungs so as not to damage the pelt. ¢ For every animal caught for the fur trade, two non-target animls are caught in traps, e.g., cats, dogs, deer, birds of prey, etc. These are called ‘trash animats’’ by the fur trade. ® Many trapped animals actually suceeed in chew- ing through their own limbs to free themselves from the trap. ¢ Ranch-raised animals are treated much the same as factory farm animals in that they are not regarded as living creatures capable of confusion, pain, loneliness or distress bit are mecely units to be “arown"’ as quickly as possible. e Animals raised on fur farms, mainly mink and fox, spend their entire lives in tiny wire cages with as many as 1-4 animals per cage. Deprived of normal activity they often practice self-mutilation, can- nibalism and pathological repetitive behavior. © They are only allowed to live a fraction of their normal life span and are usually killed before they reach one year of age. Since furriers are primarily interested in profits. animals are usually killed in the cheapest way possible by neck breaking, suffocation, poisoning, gassing or anal electrocution, whereby an animal is held by the neck and tail and has a metal rod inserted into its rectum. Mr.Pappas claims that animal rights activists have had little effect on sales. Perhaps he would like to explain why in March. 1990, Harrods of London closed its fur salon. In April, 1990, Spiegel dropped fur from its catalogue. Fashion leaders including Giorgio Armani, Bill Blass and Norman Kamali have pledged never to work with fur again — all a direct result of animal rights groups informing the public of the horrors involved in the production of fur.
