Canfor pulp mill ad is ‘an insult’, reader says

Dear Editor:

Your newspaper contained an
advestisement by Canfor for its
good intentions and environmental
concerns. Canfor intends to ex-
pand its environmentally delin-
quent mill at Port Mellon and the
Manager wants to know what we
think. I can't imagine why.

Modern medicine, improved
technology, government orders
and thousands of concerned people
through petition have been trying
to tell them for years what we
think. The advertisement is there
merely to confuse and defuse the
issue as they apply for yet another
amendment to allow them to con-
tinue spewing toxic wastes into the

air at a rate which exceeds all
standards set by the government.

The provincial government has
been telling them what we think.
That's what good government
does. But unfortunately the gov-
ernment, and in particular the en-
vironment ministry, has not en-
forced any of it in the past. Exten-
sions, amendments, permits, etc,
come and go and still Canfor does
not respond.

The apparent impotence of the
government in dealing with Canfor
is again to be tested by Canfor in
applying for this new amendment.

permits within 4 working days. The rest take 8-12 days
As you may be aware, if takes no less than six to eight weeks
to process and issue a building permit in the District of North
