Holiday styles
rely on tin foil
and an iron

THIS party season,
you'll do well to let
fashion’s infatuation
with the ’80s go to
your head.

Even if you're not into
wearing barwing tops, shoul-
der pads and other signature
looks from the Era of Excess,
you can fap into the trend by
trying out one of the holiday,
season's hottest styles for hair.

If you're game for a new
look then it's time to get cre-
ative, « according to Karl
Robathan, .an_ international
guest artist for JOICO hair
products and owner of North
Van salon Hair Mode.

“The days of wrapring hair
around a roller or curling iron
are gone,” says the stylist, who
was a provincial finalist in last
month’s Contessa Awards, the
Canadian hair industry's
answer to the Oscars.

For the holiday season,
Robathan is inspired by the
music of Duran Duran,
Frankie Goes to Hollywood
and. The Cure as well as the
*80s-influenced — collections
from Gucci and Prada. He
uses aluminum foil as a styling
tool to achieve the crimped
hairstyle pictured far right.

Here, he provides the step-
by-step for achieving two ver-
sions of the look.

Criss-cross: Working with
clean, dry hair, take large, hor-
izontal sections, comb smooth
and spritz with a light hair-
spray such as Ice Finisher.
Place: hair inside foil and fold
over the sides of the foil to

“create a long narrow package.

Fold the foil in an accordion-
style manor, then simply press a flat iron on the package for
about five seconds. Leave to cool and unwrap foil.

New wave: Starting with clean, dry hair, take large, horizon-
tal sections, comb smooth and spritz with a light hairspray such
as Joico JoiMist (Firm). Place hair inside foil and fold over the
sides of the foil to create a long, narrow package.

Then take a curling iron (the size of the barrel doesn’t mat-
ter) and place iron horizontally. across the foil, starting at the
root. Simply squeeze the iron on the foil, then repeat the same
below the [ast section but rotate the iron the opposite direction
to create a corrugated pattern the length of the toil. Once com-
plete, let cool and simply remove the foil.
