Whooping cough A surge of whooping cough infections has afflicted North Shore residents in the last two months. Debbie Ryan, director of the maternal child yout program ior North Shore Health Region, said the North Shore recorded 28 cases of the bacterial infee- tion in the fast 60 days. Usually, one of neo cases of whooping cough or Bordetella pertussis infection is logged cach week on the Norti Shore. It’s not unusual to go sev- eral weeks without any reported cases here. Ryan said the North Shore is not unique in the recent increase in cases. The province has experienced a wave of pertussis infections recently. The North Shore has not been as hard hit as other areas of the province. “Obviously we are con- cerned around individuals and how their — cases progress,” said Ryan. She added that pre-school- ers and older people are more at risk for the effects of the infection. But the recent increase in whooping cough cases has afflicted children aged 10 to 14. Heavy and frequent coughing associated with whooping cough prevents people from cating properly. The coughing can stimulate vomiting. Ryan said the spread in pertussis is expected to go down when school officially ends next week. Young children reeeive vaccines for pertussis. Ryan said there are incanchiusive theories about why whoop- ing cough cases have increased in the last few years despite vaccinations. Ryan referred to World Health Organization infor- mation indicating that in countries where there are no vaccination programs, per- tussis is a major health prob- tem in children and causes an estimated 300,000 deaths a year. Canada © statistically records less than one death a year from the infection. Anyone with a persistent cough that lasts more than two weeks, should see their doctor.
