The renovation is a millennium project paid through the Lions Gate Hospital Foundation. The renovation will include a waterfall as well as a more convenient patient drop-off and pick-up ‘area. The. 13th Street entrance will be closed during the renovation, Construction was slated to start at the end of the month. Sheilah Grant, director of development for the Lions Gate Hospital Foundation, was unavailable for comment to press time. The hospital’s main entrance on 15th Street will remain open. It will continue to be the hospital’s main entrance after the 13th Street project is complete, said North Shore Health egion spokesman Clay Adams, He added that the foundation’s money can be used for renovations and buying, hospital equipment, it can’t be used, he said, for such operating budget expenses as paying staff. Adams said 3 foundation donor wanted OC facelitt funds to go specifically to the 13th Street entrance project. The project gets under way as the hospital continues having financial and staffing prob- lems. Last week, Lions Gate Hospital reopened 20 of 39 beds that had been closed in October because of a nurse shortage. In December, the North Shore Health Region faced a $2 million deficit because of the high use of hospital acute care services such as operating rooms, the emergency department and intensive care and cardiac care units. The provincial government came through with $500,000 to partially offset that deficit. Last week, the region’s surgical waiting list stood at 3,355 people. The health region is trying to reduce the number of people waiting for operations to 2,850 by the end of March. That figure would be a 20% reduction com- pared with last year’s number. Meanwhile the millennium project includes a Handy Dart access area, a waiting area for rehabilitation patients and asbestos removal. LGH was opened on East 13th Street in 1961. The main entrance was changed to 15th Street when the hospital expanded north with a parkade in 1979.
