Bridge inspires poetry on metion LYNN Valley resident Edwin G. Dunn, a mechanical engineer, submits the follawing bright solution ta North Shore bridge woes in the form of a poem he calls, quite logical- ly, The Bridge Poem: The Lions Gate is one of two bridges cross- ing Burrard Inlet Older of the two and narrower it spans First Narrows yet The second and newer bridge crosses beside arail lift bridge CP Rail tracks run east-west part way along the inlet south side And EC Rail follows the most northerly route of the inlet wide While CN Rail tunnels under Vancouver Heights to emerge On to the Second Narrows lift bridge and with BC Rail seems to merge A very important new passenger service from Mission uses CP Rail Now when J looked at these facts and inves- tigated on foot The most obvious became clear to me: A new inlet-circling route So I set my thoughts down in great detail and submitted a report Selecting criteria normal to commuter mov- ing, not cars, I depart The provincial house stalls on decision mak- ing till all facts are checked And soon must choose an option including Lions Gate Bridge redecked In my report 1 proposed a scheme that would satisfy that option As I reiterate, the Lions Gate Bridge redeck- ing is first priority Parts of my report, recalled here hopefully prove the scheme’s superiority While the new bridge deck is under con- struction and continuously So should other facilities that would link up simultancously New rail line through Coal Harbour and along Stanley Park causeway mid-lane, say New bridge deck includes rail line replacing Should include a new transit terminal at Denman Street New elevated rai! line from near Capilano Road would meet And join BC Rail south of Capilano Mall for the first tie-in of two The second tie-in to BC Rail, east of Lynn Creek, with branch line new Ramp up at gentle gradient and curve into the bridge frame And cross Second Narrows below the road deck, then tunnel and curve West onto a ramp down to join CP Rail near the PNE grounds The proposal, you must note, is a single line circuit with clockwise direction A logical extension of the service now initi- ated from Mission Just imagine the sight of the colorful West Coast Express flashing Over the bridge to North Vancouver and/or up to Squamish, and beyond Again I must point out that this highlights only the essence least cost. _ Of the scheme which my proposal hopes will bring credence To the expression: do the most good for the An opportunity to promote transit WESTLYNN resident Ernie Crist is a North Vancouver District councillor: “I do not for a minute believe that it was necessary to let the ‘Second Narrows Bridge dete- ‘riorate to the extent it has. “There is, however, a sil- ver lining. If the present chaos, minor in. comparison to what might happen in a seal emergency such as an earthquake, will stir us into action to press for a more fun- damental solution of the cross-inlet traffic problem, the current inconvenience will not have been in vain. Our current mode which is’ moving cars instead of people is no longer satisfactory. “am convinced that if we ‘had a public transportation system which is affordable, efficient. and convenient, ‘taany people would gladly! leave. their. cars at home in exchange for a comfortable and fast ride in a rapid transi ‘coach while reading the morning paper. We can learn a lot from other cities. _“At a recent. Federation of Canadian Municipalities Convention in Calgary, which I, along with some other members of district council attended, we learned that the cost for a monthly and trans- ferable pass including rapid transit for that city is $48 compared with Vancouver's $75 and downtown commut- ing is free altogether. Senior citizens and low-income peo- ; ple pay appropriately reduced rates. “We need to demand noth- ing less than a direct rapid s transit link-up, and it should be via a tunnel. This needs to be augmented by an efficient bus system, including mini buses, taking people from SAVE MONEY WITH { AUTOPLAN 12 Insurance / 3 locations on the North Shore DEEP COVE Doltartan Stopoig Centre Ni Bol lation Hwy. The first thing we must do io get there is to reject BC Transit’s and the GVRD’s contention that rapid transit to the North Shore is not warranted or too expensive. The gasoline tax taken from our pockets should be used for public transit —- not go into general revenue. “The economic scenario will change even more if we remove the present subsidies to accommodate the automo- bile, estimated to be $2,600 per year per car, and transfer this subsidy into public trans- portation.” Free Initial Consultation Douglas W. Stop the insanity ANDY Raney makes this comment fom the Seylynn area of North Vancouver: “Our illustrious Mayor Dykeman strove to new heights on” June 1} witha speech to rival any idiot’s during a BCTV inter- view, with regard to the Keith Road on- ramp and the’ Fern Street issue. / “All of the North Shore willbe affected in: ‘one way, or another, not just {2 or 15, by the short-sightedness of those who lead our fair district. An east-west connector is required to the north, and those who are in favor must speak up now. Join : forces, be heard. Stop the insanity.” FACTORY FUTON crossing AMBLESIDE resident Derrick Humphreys served three terms as mayor of West Vancouver and was an alderman in North Vancouver City and in West Vancouver for a peri- od of 40 years: “The present two bridge crossings of Burrard Inlet will always be pregnant with problems until a third crossing relieves the ever- growing transit need. “The only way to serve and solve this transporta- ° tion problem is by a tunnel crossing for road and © SkyTrain.
