charges result in a conviction.

Atkinson said one in four sex
offenders will likely reoffend.
Although it is difficult to know who
they might be, common characteris-
tics tend to reappear in repeat
offenders.

“Sexual offences aren't: an
impulse,” Atkinson said. “They are
predictable in many ways.”

Street-proofing kids means “a
healthy awareness of potential dan-
gers.”

Parents should be familiar with
school safety programs and contin-
ue to reinforce those ideas at home.
Atkinson also emphasizes that a
child sex offender is more likely to
be a friend or an acquaintance close
to the family rather than a stranger.

“Most of the sex offenders are
quite normal-looking individuals,”
Atkinson said. “No wonder they get
away with it for so long. They're so
average and so trusted.”
