Continuing education is usually self-supporting. The school district, carrying a $2.6 million accumulated deficit, overesti- mated revenues for some continuing education programs and did not make large enough reductions to offset rev- enue shortfalls, said Brayne. The district's final budget was sub- mitted on Feb. 28, 1995 but the reduc- ions needed to balance the budget for continuing education were not recog- nized until the spring, said Brayne. Adjustments have been made to the 1995-96 continuing education budget to reflect the likelihood reduc- tions will be permanent, Brayne said. The budget for courses in the three continuing education areas — high school completion and adult basic education, community programs, and job retraining — is about $6 million. But determining that budget is compli- cated because some continuing educa- tion is integrated with regular courses, while others depend on provincial and federal funding, Brayne said. Meanwhile, trustees asked chair- man Barbara MacLellan to arrange a meeting with Education Minister Art Charbonneau to discuss the deficit. MacLellan is not sure when the meeting will take place. “Our time line is always as soon as possible, but the minister’s time line always seems to be soinething differ- ent! 3 locations on the North Shore | _ LONSDALE 3rd & Lonsdale 136 West 3rd.
