IT WAS a very elegant
black-tie {urnout for Holt
Renfrew’s fashion gala bene-
fit for Arts Umbrella last
Monday night at Ruy Paes-
Braga’s Four Seasons Hotel.

Nice to see the recently side-
lined diplomat, Percy von
Lepiusky up on his long legs again.
Percy had been furiously cycling
down a trail near UBC when his
tire hit some gravel and he went
over the handlebars, breaking his
thigh...

Equally good to see such gener-
ous humanilarians as Rosemary
and Joe Segal and champagne
queen Gwen Rogers, along with
wine whiz Richard Carras and his
attractive wife Marion. Wendy
Thompson and Pamela
Richardson co-chaired the affair
with a sold-out house of 375 guests
including U.S. Consul General
Michael Gallagher and wife
Martha, Patsy and Greg
Hartigan, Leon Bibb, Anne
Mortifee and Susan Cox and a
host of other VIPs...

Earlier I'd been chatting with
Mei Zajac, Patrick Oswald, John
Grey and Gary Wong about their
upcoming ceremony next Thursday
to officially name the new United
Way building to the Mel and Marty

Plaza hosted ACTA‘S kick-off
reception with more than 400
happy guests dancing and dining
and managed to raise a whopping
$7,000-plus for the Variety Club's
Lifeline program. This program
provides funds for transportation of
seriously iJ] children to necessary
hospitals.

The lucky winner of the draw
for Fiesta West's trip for two to
Mazatlan was Howe Sound
Travel’s John Cave! Oooo was he
ever happy...

The Yaletown Galleria was wild
with every media person in town at
Avant Garde’s fashion extravagan-
za helping to raise funds for the
Children’s HIV Care Unit at
Children’s Hospital.

Tt was such a joyous occasion
with some of the biggest names in
the communications industry strut-
ting their stuff before the packed
house.

It was wonderful to see CBC's
Kevin Evans. BCTV’s Debberah
Hope, the newly-confirmed hast of
U-News at six. Suzette Myers, her
co-host Russ Froese, his wife
Margo Bates. 23.30's Norma
Wick, Phil Johnson, the newly-
wed Holly Chester and Jan
Carinei and Doe Harris, who was
let go from CFUN justin time to be
scooped up by CKNW.

One of the stars of the evening
was little eight-year old actor Joel
Palmer who was there with his
mum and dad, Reta and Brent
Palmer. Joel's having an excep-
tional year. He has 2 three-film deal
with 20th Century Fox; he recently
completed shooting on Yellow Dog
and started work last week on the
new movie, Lost & Found with
Lisa Hartman...
