Dear Editor: Q: When does the North Shore stop being the North Shore? A: When development makes it just another suburb. It’s not difficult to understand why the North Shore attracts people who are interested in the quality of life that is available here. Having said that, it is with some skepticism that I view future proposals and commitments by the various North Shore councils to developments and their subse- quent impact on present residents. As a Blueridge resident, | am very concerned with the effects on community and environinent of future developments on the pleas- antly wooded slopes of the Seymour areas. At a time when many cities are trying to correct the mistakes of ill-conceived plans and their ef- fects on the livability of neigh- ‘borhoods, our district council is contemplating linking up future developments in such a way as to increase traffic in existing neigh- borhoods that are at present quiet NDP adding insult to injury An open letter to Premier Mike Harcourt: “I am extremely pleased to say that I did NOT vote NDP during the last election, and 1 would imagine by now that there are a whole bunch of pecple wishing they hadn’t cither! Your iatest little escapade has prompted me to write this letter, which hopefully will encourage others to refuse to pay anymore of your ‘‘new taxes.””” It was recently reported that there was a 22% pay increase for certain upper management in B.C. Transit — this during a time of extreme economic crisis. To add insult to injury, you are now proposing to add $50 onto my and all other Vancouver drivers’ insurance to cover the. cost of the transit deficit. This is on top of the outrageous 19% ICBC insurance increase of 1992, and a further 14% or more to come in 1993. Did it ever occur to you or your “financial advisers’’ fin quotes because’ it seems inconceivatle with our present mess that they know anything about finances), that if you gave out 22% pay N. The first of these plans is to link up Berkley with Mount Seymour Road via a Hyannis connector. Concerns for the safety of our children and an already escalating crime rate will be exacerbated if this connectar praceeds. In defence of our community, we have organized the Blueridge Community Association to make our voices heard. As councils and mayors come and go, we will still be living here with the consequences of their decisions. It is precisely this sense of community which exists in the current plan of our neighborhood that leads to the enthusiasm of groups such as ours. I think its time that all residents along the North Shore became ac- tive in their communities. In this way, we may yet have a greater say in preserving our neighbor- hoods. Ernst Schmidt North Vancouver hikes there would not be enough money in the coffers to cover this? Of course, despite all NDP cries against Social Credit for “‘patronage,’’ this stinks of the very same thing or even payback for help during the election. Get with it, Mike, there are a lot of people out here who are struggling to make ends meet. Isn't it time that you helped the majority of people, not just special interest groups or your buddies! Jan Hills North Vancouver Dear Editor: The Department of Motor Vehicles and ICBC appear to be more concerned with profit than safety. Don't just blame speeders, it is the overall quality of drivers that is the problem. ICBC and the Department of Motor Vehicles must work more intricately to obtain a higher standard of driver. They Fducation key to safe driving must teach people to drive, not just know how to. Anybody can sit behind the wheel and put it into drive, but not everybody knows how to drive safely.
