NV Folkfest chance to showcase local talent NORTH VANCOUVER City Alderman Stella Jo Dean is ready and willing to pass the baton on to anyone who will take it. By Evelyn Jacob News Reporter This isn’: an official statement of resignation, but a matter of standing back and letting someone else take charge. Dean isn’t talking politics. She’s referring to a community event she founded and has headed-up for close to two decades. Tomorrow North Vancouver Folkfest gets under way, and Dean will be there organizing last-minute details as she has for the past 18 years. ‘Every year I say please, some- one else take it on. They're all willing to help, but nobody wants to take it on,’ says Dean, who is one of dozens of local citizens who volunteer for the event each year. Traditionally, Folkfest has been a forum for local artists and ar- tisans to showcase their talent. This year the event includes an arts and crafts fair (June 18-27) at North Vancouver City Civic Cen- tre, a two-hour garden city walk- ing tour (June 21 at 2 p.m.), sponsored by the North Vancouver Heritage Advisory Committee, three evenings of dance at Cen- tennial Theatre and a mini-festival Bridge hosting 1889 Days party ORGANIZERS AT Capilano Suspension Bridge are inviting North Shore residents to enjoy some old-fashioned fun during the 1889 Days celebration sched- uled for Saturday, June 20 and Sunday, June 21. From noon until 4 p.m., visitors of all ages will be able to laugh and sing with musical entertainer John Prisland, who will perform old-time songs played on an array of old-time instruments. A marionette show called the Carnival of Animals will be per- formed at 1:45 p.m. In honor of George Grant at Silver Harbour Centre (June 21 at I p.m.). In 18 years, some things have changed. For instance, Folkfest used to include 13 straight nights of entertainment at Centennial Theatre. Today it has heen reduc- ed to threc. Centennial Theatre is more ex- pensive to rent, says Dean, and although the city and district have assisted with publicity this year, Folkfest has never asked the municipalities for funding. (This year it received support from various groups, including the Minister of Education and Minister Responsible for Multiculturalism and Human Rights B.C.) Dean says the free program of song and dance (June 20-22) is to Promote multiculturalism and racial tolerance on the North Shore. Jt features the Tatsumi Japanese Dancers, the Vancouver italian Folk Choir, the Strathcona Chinese Dancers and Dovbush Ukranian Dancers, to name a few. Everyone involved in the festi- val is a volunteer, since not even the performers are paid. ‘‘The performers don’t even receive an honorarium. We've always said that so people don't expect it,” says Dean. Anyone who would like to join the volunteer committee to plan next year's Folkfest is encouraged to do so. Oh, and anyone who would like to relieve Dean of her duties may phone her at 987-6085. Mackay, who built the original swinging bridge 230 feet above the Capilano River 103 years ago, the day's festivities will include per- formances by a Scottish bagpiper at 3 and 4 p.m. People interested in learning about the history of the bridge can take a guided tour. The barbecue will feature coun- try chili and corn on the cob in addition to the regular menu from 11:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Ten-cent ice cream treats will also be available.
