MAILBOX | PI Let Quebec separate from 1 Canada without bloodshed Dear Editor: While most Canadians are try- ing desperately to find a com- promise iz the Quebec problem, it would seem Noel Wright is pro- moting an armed intervention to stop Quebec from getting too good a deal. I would like to know what ratio of young soldiers’ lives per acre you would see as acceptable, Noel? There are two things that re- main out of Ottawa’s control — if Quebec wishes to leave Con- federation, they eventually will, and no amount of human sacrific- ing is going to change that. Secondly, these people will always live right next door, and so it will always be in our own best interests to get along with them. Canada has an obligation only to the native people of Quebec, to ensure a satisfactory resolution to all land claims prior to separatism. We all, however, have a duty to the young people of both Quebec and Canada to nego- tiate our outstanding grievances without resorting to threats or vi- olence. Whether an independent Quebec becomes a financial success re- mains to be seen. I truly believe, however, that future historians will credit this separation as hav- ing dealt the final blow to French culture in North America. tf Quebec can’t sre they are getting a better shake from Canada now, than they wil! from a post-separation North America, they are only deceiving themselves and condemning their grandchil-- dren to the same loss of cultural React with horror to Collins’ suggestion Dear Editor: Thank you! I had been convinced that Doug Collins had lost his once acute dexterity in slicing modern mores with his finely honed satiric voice. Any reader who has followed the seemingly unassailable logic of the greatest. Of English satirists, Jonathan Swift, would surely have been happy to te as skilfully ensnered with Doug’s use of that same style in his Nov. 20 column. It wasn't until I understood that “fone’’ of ‘‘thousands’’ was the proof upon which his argument was based that I realized he had hooked me — in exactly the same way that Dr. Johnson hooked his readers in ‘‘A Modest Proposal.” Like Doug, Johnson also used prevailing social conditions to flail the consciences of his readers with bitter irony. He argued that the peasants cf. Ireland could afford to feed themselves if they sold their children as food for the rich. Just as the wealthy English reacted with horror to Dr. Johnson’s ‘‘Modest Proposal’’ that they should feast on che babies of the Irish, we should teact with horror to Doug’s satiric suggestion that Canadians should close our doors (and our minds) to the wealth of opportunities that immigrants and refugees today br- ing to our nation.
