Shore News Mailbox policy Few homeowners support complex in neighborhood Dear Editor: Regarding the front page stories of the October 25 issue, ‘Seniors face housing squeeze’’ and ‘‘City council news,’’ at the heart of both stories is a developer who has applied for an amendment to the Official Community Plan (OCP) so that he may build a 42-unit apartment building in the 200 block of East 23rd St. — a neighborhood which is currently single family. Under the heading ‘Council News’’ it was reported that city staff had concluded that tie above-mentioned complex is ap- propriate for the area — when in fact city planning staff recom- mend to council that they reject the proposal. Your story on the reported shortage of seniors housing states that ‘‘Belyea’s firm was hired to conduct a survey of the residents in the area, and according to the survey, most favor the seniors coimplex."” This is just not true. in fact, the survey showed that only 16 homes out of 42 homes surveyed sup- ported the complex. Of the 16 homes who originally supported the complex a large number of them have since withdrawn their support, as it was conditional and this complex doesn’t meet those conditions. Mr. Belyea himself after some pressure from one of the home involved, informed council of this at the October 22 council meeting, a full iour days prior to your report being published. A recent petition circulated in the neighborhood shows that almost 90% of the homeowners in the urea are opposed to the cam- plex. As far as Mr. Belyea’s firm's How many has Cook read? Dear Editor: Ah, yes, good old Chuck Cook. **Cnuck Cook here,on a CJOR Sunday,” I used to hear his bub- bly, intelligent voice speak out during his talk show host days. J was briefly acquainted with him then and enjoyed haunting him along with many others with my Rich Little impersonations in my early freelance radio days. I would go into the station and there would be Chuck lying on the lobby couch, shoes off, with a pile of pocket books on the floor beside him. He was and no doubt still is a very serious, avid reader, possibly the most well-read man I know. Since then he made the er- ror of going into politics, and as a conservative of all things, Now he just ‘‘toes the line,"’ makes nasty remarks about civil servants during civil service strikes and professes to be a self-ap- pointed judge on the Canadian literary establishment. Perhaps the subsidization of Canadian books needs a second look but only after we subtract the GST revenues from the subsidies first! In recent years there has been a deluge of good Canadian books on the market, but | suspect Chuck has not read many. Being an ar- dent reader 1 wonder how many Canadian books he has in fact read of late? T.E. If the area resi- dents hired a consultant to do a report on the importance of neighborhood preservation, how unbiased do you think it would be? Come on, North Shore News, the residents of a neighborhood which has been in a long bitter fight with a developer deseive bet- ter reporting than this! I hope that the problem lies with the reporters and not that the News is worried about losing a client who happens to have a large advertising budget, of which the News has been the benefactor in recent weeks.
