Betore venturing on a tong tip it’s wise
to do at ieast one weekend tun to
establish some ground rules - and to
find out how well your keds adjust to
travel. You may find out that you'd be
better off staying home

Once you've decided to take a tonger
trip. involve the kids im the planning.
This 18 @ good time to «mtroduce them to
Maps and guidebooks.

{f you haven't already done so, take
them to a couple of restaurants for din-
ner. Coach them on acceptable stand-
ards of behavior be“-se you have to cope
with a traveling circus.

Remember, on a long trip repacking 1s
necessary - perhaps every day. Do you
want the job?

Satchels are a better choice than suit-
cases for kids. A kid can carry a satchel,
but a suitcase is usually too big for a
child to manage untess he drags it. The
trunk of the average car holds more
satchels than suitcases.

Provide a laundry bag and collect the
family laundry every night. Don't at-
tempt to bring enough clothes to Jast
the entire trip - resign yourself to a visit
to a taundromat every four or five days.

Do your kids have some special toy or
blanket that they steep with? If so, don’t
leave it home! You won't enjoy the job
of convincing an overtired five-year-old
that “Bunnykins” wil sleep just fine
without her.

Traveting with kids is a whole lot dif-
ferent from an adults-only excursion.
Kids don’t sleep in.

The best motels for kids have pools.
Another plus is an adjacent park or
playing fied, After being coop-up in seat
belts since the morning, kids need
space.

The time spent in the car can be the
best of the worst part of the holiday.
Here are a few tips for keeping it fun:

- Stop frequently. How often do adults
puli over to admire a view or read a
toadside marker? When you travel with
kids you'll learn a lot.

- Bring along a bag of fun stuff. Sticker
books, comic books, puzzles, simple
games and joke prizes. Dole these out
when you sense a bit of tension bulding
up.

+ Kids enjoy collecting things. tn fact,
they can shame the average pack rat.
It's wise to set limits on acceptable
souvenirs. Provide smallish tote bags for
their treasures, a notebook and a roll of
tape. Pencils are better than pens for
use in a car. Crayons melt.

- Small kids can’t see out of car win-
dows. Bring along firm cushions to raise
them up a bit.

A reader cailed with the question: “Why
is it so difficult to book those wonder-
ful, quaint aid inexpensive hotels we're
always reading about. through the
agencies?”

The answer is very simple - agencies
don't charge you a fee for their services
but they have to make money somehow.
The big hotel chains pay commissions
for bookings while the little ones can’t
afford to.

Travel writers are constantly looking for
these little properties and whenever we
find one we rush the word to readers.
The problem is that the readers have to
do their own bookings. Tha. s not likely
to change.

Another great source of small hotel
listings is the Chamber of Commerce in
each town. That's how 1 got the list of
B&B properties when we visited La
Conner, WA. Even our Chamber on the
North Shore has a tist.

Wf 1 want ta make my own booking |
don't rely on the mail service to do the
job. | wait until telephone rates drop
and call. t've never had a provlens mak-
ing a reservation this way, confirming it
with a maited deposit. It is not a good
idea to give your credit card number
over the phane but | must admit | have
done it once or twice when ous tip was
spur of the moment and when | knew
the hotel weil.
