According to the Mosiem cal- endar. the event takes place on the 10h oof Dhil-Hijjah, the last uionth of the Moslem year. The Feast of Sacrifice occurs during the annual pilgrimage to the Ka‘aba, a sacred building in Mecca — the prophet Mohamm- ed's birthplace. After having visited the Ka‘aba and performing ritual ceremonies, pilgrims leave Mecca and travel to Mina, Arafat and Muzdalifa. To qualify, a person must have a chronic (or ongoing) illness, be a Canadian citizen or landed im- migrant, have fived in B.C. for 12 months prior to application, and be over the age of 19 years. To find out if he is eligible, you can speak to an Intake Worker at North Shore Health at 986-7111. Once it is decided that your fa- ther is in the program, a case manager will visit him in his home: & to conduct a one or two-hour sit- uation assessment. The case man- ager will ask questions about the health problem, and try to establish what kind of help he needs. it would be helpful if you or another family member could be present during this meeting to provide support or additional in- formation. -Help can include personal care services or bathing, grooming, shopping, housekeeping, laundry, nursing and physiotherapy. Depen- ding on what they can afford, pilgrims sacrifice all or part of a camel, caw, goat or sheep to cymmemorate the sacrifice of the animal in the same way that Abraham sacrificed an animal after God released him from sacrificing his son [shinael. The two main types of fa- cilities are intermediate care homes and extended care units. There are also private hospitals that may provide care services for your father. North Shore Health has a series of pamphlets on the Long Term Care Program and on choosing a care home. It is avail- able from their office at 132 West Esplanade, on the fifth floor, in North Vancouver. You may be right in saying that your father’s need for 24-hour eare in a nursing home is not urgent, but in the meantime, he could require the home support services mentioned earlier. Anyone receiving the Guaranteed Income Supplement will receive the services at mc cost. If he were admitted to a care fa- cility, the cost would be set at a fixed daily rate.
