aoe eras SPORTS Hollyburn badminton players shine NORTH SHORE badminton players have proved := be a dom- inant force both in provincial and national championships over the past month. At the Canada Winter Games, the B.C. team, coached by Holiyburn pro Zip Dhanani, won a silver medal. North Shore athletes made up half of the team with players Brent Olynyk, Moira Ong, Elma Ong, Altison Rice and Nancy Reid. Moira joined with Darry! Yung of Victoria to win a gold medal in the mixed doubles event, thwar- ting Quebec’s atttempt at a clean sweep. Moira also paired with her sister, Elma, to win a_ bronze medal in the women’s doubles. Meanwhile, in the women’s singles, Elma added a bronze to B.C.'s list of medals. While North Shore athletes were at the Canada Games, athietes from Hollyburn Country Club were busy winning a silver medal in the junior division of the B.C. Games. Coached by Arif Mawani, the team came entirely fram Hollyburn. As well as producing the top under-f6 badminton players in the Lower Mainland, Hollyburn’s Fraser Reid played a role in winning the gold medal for the zone five team in the open division. Three days after the Canada Games and B.C. Games finished, local players were back on the court at the B.C. Junior Champi- onships. National junior team members Moira and Elma Ong and Olynyk won under-19 titles while Rice, Reed and Jason Kittler under-16 titles. Hoilyburn players were finalists in 16 out of 20 finals, eventually winning nine provincial titles.
