28 — Wednesday, April 28, 1999 — North Shore News Press Council essay competition launched Creeks, watershed undergo cleanup THE McCartney Creek watershed — and its tributary Blueridge, Trillium and Mountain creeks — is receiving a facelift under biologist Gerry Leering, the new volunteer co-ordi- nator for the water- shed. Background intormation and inspections showed eral fish improvement: pro- grams could pursue funding through the D partment of heri¢es and Oceans’ (DFO) Salmonid Habitat Enhancement Program. Funding was also avail- able through the provincial Fisheries Renewal Program. Other support came from the North Shore Streamkeepers and North Vancouver District. Last month 10 small min- now traps were placed in var- ious locations throughout the watershed to determine existing fish populations in the neighbourhood streams. A total of 10. cutthroar trout were caught. Frevious survevs under- taken by the DFO since 1982 have observed num- bers of fail adult spawning coho salmon in McCartney Creek to be as high as 76 in 1987, The average number of fish surveyed cach year is approximately 20. Three area elementary schools = — Blueridge, Seymour Heights and Plymouth — will be releasing into the creek the coho try that were incubated over the winter in their various cl rooms. In all, close to 1,000 coho fry will be stocked into McCartney Creek. The coho nursery pro- gram undertaken by teachers and students was called Salmonids in the Classroom. The three schools were also approached to assist the crecks’ cleanup as cre banks in the Blueridge/McCartney area known as Windridge Park, from the ice arena to the Windsor high school grounds, desperately need attention. A: great deal of garbage, including a tennis net, tires, bike parts and other unique items that could be properly disposed of, have been found in the streams. Several stream banks in the upstream area of the for- mer Blair Rifle Range have now been planted with dog- wood and willow cuttings. The cuttings will stabili the banks and provide cover and food. Plans to work with other community = groups ta enhance the fishery’s poten- tial of the area streams will continue. Any individual, group, or family that wishes to get involved with the stream- keepers program for the Creck watershed ering at 929- 2068. Leering will also help lead any interested groups with waterfront enhance: ment and on other local streams east of the Seymour River, THE B.C.
