Pricey, but worth it

Y FIRST La Belle Sole experience was neither belle
nor full of culinary soul. But | am happy to report
that this long-lived West Vancouver seafood res-

taurant is back in good form.

bAy initial visit to the restaurant
was three years ago, at which time
it had just changed hands from
original Solemen Michel Lozier
and Gerard Page to Enrique Fer-
nandez.

Restaurants do not like changing
ands any more than anyone else.

They rebel.

Waiters become befuddled;
chefs bungle dishes; and patrons
are sent away with feelings of
unease and dyspepsia.

But the rebellion has obviously
been quelled because there was a
much more assured feel about La
Belle Sole on my most recent visit.

And the restaurant itself was ob-
viously far more comfortable with
its new ownership.

Decor included a colorful
display of wines — always a good
indication of viticultural con-
sciousness — and cognacs.

Live piano music added an in-
spiring romantic touch to ¢a
Belle’s already visually inspiring
second-floor view of Vancouver
and its harbor.

My only complaint would be the
lack of any provision for non-
smokers. Coupled with a poor air
circulation system, the oversight
made pleasant breathing impossi-

e.

Of course, the Table Hopping
team, being exclusively non-smok-
ing, were seated next to a four-
some of avid tobacco heads whose
lichters flashed away all evening in
their pursuit of an early grave,
leaving us wreathed in toxic
tobacco fumes from appetizer
through to dessert.

But on to more agreeable sub-

predecessor's. But its prices are
not for the financially faint of
heart.

A cup of coffee, for instance, is
$1.75.

And entrees start at around $17
and continue up to $23.
