Pewee! CHEAP GETAWAY Reno trip offers more than gambling thrills VD BE willing to bet that Reno, Nevada is the most fre- quent travel destination for Lower Mainlanders. I ‘doubt if. any place else in the world has so much going for it as 2 holiday destination. First, consider the costs involv- ed. Where else can you go as cheaply? Airline and accommoda- tion packages for under $300 are offered by tour operators such as Silver Wing and Canadian. If you don’t like to fly, and don’t mind buses, you can get the ‘same deal for under $200 from such conipanies as. Maverick: * If you decide to drive, economize by leaving home with just enough gas to get over the border and fill up on the other side. My route of choice is High- way #1 to the 264 cutoff (Aldergrove) because the border crossing is easier there. If you have bad habits, stock up at the Duty Free on liquor and cigarettes, but be aware that liquor prices in Nevada are just as low as the Duty Free. ‘Just for those of us who still smoke and prefer Canadian brands — if you. run out, the Cal-Neva Club keeps a cigarette machine just for us — ask at the information booth and they’ll direct you. More on the route of choice: We drive south on I-5 to Eugene, Orege * and spend the night. If you shoula ve so foolish as to prefer to drive straight through, the total driving time is roughly 15 hours. Immediately vutside of Eugene you'll see a huge road sign direc- ting. you to Klamath Falls. Go there. Economy- minded travellers invariably eat at . the casinos — breakfast can be had in some for 99¢ and that’s your full bacon ‘and eggs, damn-the- cholesterol, trip. If you’ve a streak of gluttony, head for one of the many buffets. One of the cheapest is at Cir- eus-Circus, but I wouldn’t recom- mend it unless you’re feeding a van-load of kids. The food is in gross quantities, but I’d like to have a word with the chef. Those van-loads of kids are all there, too. The breakfast buffet at Harrah’s is high quality, but bring a bie ap- petite. For curiosity, we tried the dinner buffet at the Hilton. Unless it’s improved, don’t. The casinos generally provide excellent prime rib dinners — huge quantities — and many for as little as $4.99. You’! have- no trouble finding food bargains as menus are pinned at the front of every casino that has a restaurant. The decor was dreadful, the prime ribs wonderful and the prices incredibly low. We always visited at least once, every trip, more for sentiment than any other reason. Last September we headed for our old favorite and it had been replaced by slot machines, Now, a word about drinking in Reno. If you’re gambling at a table, free drinks are provided and fools quaff them down at.a very high price. While the booze trickles down their throats, their judgment and their caution creep hand-in- hand out the nearest exit and their money finds its way to the casino’s cash box. Soft drinks are just as easy to order. In either case, the gambler is expected to tip the cocktail waitress — SO¢ is the norm. So keep a few coins handy. Money. There is no city in the world where Canadians are. more valued tourists. We drop in excess of $1 million a day in the city of Reno, alone -— never mind Vegas. Some casinos give a preferential rate of exchange for our pretty dollars, presented in cash at the gaming tables. Several offer 10 per cent exchange but the current best is the Cal-Neva Club at 7% per. cent. That tip comes from an old friend and neighbor, Bert Sproule, who just returned. He’s a chartered accountant and likes to total the bottom line. He told me, gleefully, ‘‘I finally got Jean to play the dollar slots — three bucks a crack. She had a wonderful time, but get this! When we got home, she had $28 more than she started with.”’ I have always known that the best odds for a slot player are on the dollar machines. I play them to try and win back the money I lose at cards. 1 am not an unskilful card player — even my bridge club tolerates me.
