MaAILBox 7 - Friday, October 21, 1988 - North Shore News Yacht racers cause ‘horror shor Dear Editor: May I, in my now subdued state of anger, take the time to describe to you a scene from a_ horror show? On Sunday, Sept. 11, my family and I were fishing, anchored along with at least five other boats at Union Bay, which is on the nor- th east point of Cowan Point. The West Vancouver Yacht Club was involved in a race which was started, | believe, from the Passage Island area. The reasons for my anger were the actions of a good number of these 28-to-40-foot sailboats which, in their arrogant wisdom and stupidity, decided to make their turns in amongst the an- chored boats. I have been a boater for a good many years and | have never expe- rienced such hair-raising fear for myself, my family and my vessel as was caused by the actions of these sailboaters who made the idiotic turns amongst us. My anger was furthered by their “don’t you know sailboaters have the right of way’’ answers. On two occasions, I had to move my rods so they wouldn’t get torn away. There were also a good number of boats which were trolling in the same area and only swift, evasive Participate in WV government Dear Editor: Those of us living in West Vancouver know we are lucky to reside in one of Canada’s finest communities. But what are we returning for what we receive? A drive through Ambleside and Dundarave has to make each resident very proud of their community, even with the temporary traffic snags we may experi- ence. While Vancouver debates the merits of the ward system and other ‘super-mege. nzojecis, West Van- couver is a unique and small ar7a without these issues. But we do have to govern our unique municipality to best serve its residents. ; Citizens For Good Government is again serving Salomon 747 BINDINGS “Reg *180.00 ADULT SKI PACKAGE | Elan CR4000 Skis 4 Look GL Bindings 830.00 DOWN 2 MONTHS MAYWEST SKI JACKETS sggos< ITALIAN STRETCH West Vancouver and urges you to think of how you could contribute to your community. During this fiasco, the Queen of Surrey, en route to Horseshoe Bay, was forced to come to a complete stop and, to further avoid the situ- ation, took a course cast of Passage Island. { spoke with Cap- tain Tim Whelan of the B.C. Ferry Corporation in Horseshoe Bay and he told me that no prior notifica- tion was given them regarding this race. He said the detour added over 12 minutes to the ferry trip.
