KITSILANO WAS known as
Greer’s Beach until 1905 when
Canadian Pacific Railway gave the
community its present name.

The word Kitsilano is an
anglisized version of
Khahtsahlanough, an early
Squamish chief whose name means
‘‘an important man of the lake.”’

Stretching from the English Bay
waterfront to the north side of
16th Avenue, and from the west
side of Burrard Street to east of
Alma Street, Kitsilano is now a
full-grown bustling community,

recreational facilities.

In earlier times, the Musqueam
Indians lived in Kitsilano, and
many tribes came to what was
known as the ‘‘sandbar,’’ now
Granville Island, to catch fish.

It was not until 1873 when
brothers Samuel and Robert
Preston of New Westminster came
to Kitsilano that logging began.
That set the stage for further
development in the area, and soon
Greer's beach became a popular
vacation spot.
