New skin analysis

makes ‘faceprint’

INSTEAD OF leaving a footprint
in the sands of time, some women
are choosing to leave a
““faceprint’’.

If you're wondering what a
“faceprint’ is talk to Chako
Nagashima, the chief international
beauty consultant for Shiseido.

“A faceprint is made by apply-
ing a special clay like material to
the cheek,’’ she explained.

“‘When it is removed, the clay
imprint of the pores and fur.ows
of the skin is viewed simulta-
neously under a microscope, on a
television screen and in an instant
photograph. The results are used
to prescribe a custom skin care
regimen for each individual
woman.””

AGE NO DISASTER

Nagashima doesn’t believe that
being over 40 or 50 necessarily
spells disaster for the complexion.

‘*Age is nothing,’’ she said.

‘*What is age, after all, but how
long you have to live. Whatever
your age, you can have good skin
or poor. Yes, age does show even-
tually but basically your skin
reflects the care you give it from
the inside by eating a balanced diet
and from the outside by giving it
good care.”

Most Japanese women have
flawless complexions,’ something
Nagashima attributes to a diet that
includes seaweed, which is very
good for the body, she said, as
well as fish.

It is not uncommon to eat tiny
fish: that are much smaller than
sardines for breakfast in Japan.

As for ‘‘outside’’ care,
Nagashima says the skin-care pro-
ducts she deems most important
are: a good soap for cleansing, a
softening lotion which prepares the
skin to deeply absorb moisturizer,
and an energizer, which is a special
cream that is applied before ‘‘ex-
ercising’’ the face.

For the Japanese, facial exercise
follows the form of the ancient art
of Shiatsu (finger pressure) com-
bined with western techniques.

GLIDING FINGERS

“By applying the cream before
exercising, fingers glide over the
face without pulling the skin,’’ she
said. ‘‘When you perform Shiatsu,
you must use the cushiony finger-
tips of the ring and middle
fingers.”’

The following is a 30-second
Shiatsu. routine. It should be
repeated twice:

Start at the centre of chin;
stroke lightly up and outward
toward corner of lips. Release
fingers toward centre front of face.
Repeat four times.

Start under nostrils; firmly
stroke up and around triangle of
nose, Repeat four times.

Use four fingers and palms of
hands to stroke firmly upward
from chin to temples. Release
hands in front of face with an
outward motion. Repeat two
times.

Gently remove cream with a
tissue to leave a protective residue.
