$50,000 to natives

THE Honorable David
Crombie, Minister of Indian
Affairs and Northern
Development, announced
recently that he has provided
$50,000 to the British Col-
umbia Aboriginal People’s
Fisheries Commission to
help the organization coor-
dinate Indian fishing activi-
ties in the province.

“‘This,is an important step
forward for the native fish-
ing community on the West
Coast and I am delighted to
have been able to provide
this financial support,’’ he
said.

Crombie said the commis-
sion, a coalition of interior
and coastal Indian bands
and tribal councils with a
common interest in

establishing a native fishing
Stratcgy, will usc the money
to develop a comprehensive
plan in consultation with
federal and provincial gov-
ernment agencies.

Formed in May 1984, the
commission wants to
establish a system of protec-
tion, management and
enhancement of coastal fish-
ing resources on behalf of
aboriginal people
throughout the province.

Earlier this year, the
commission put forward a
multi-million dollar proposal
to establish a native farm
fishing program; activities to
be included cover additional
commercial fishing, Indian
food fishing, aquaculture

and processing and ‘native
sport fishing.

It’s late, you can’t sleep —
