ing words to every Star Trek show.

Vil never get them out of
my mind. And lately 1 have
been appreciating more than
ever what a critical message
those words contain. The last
frontier.

I have begun to understand
all over again how important
spaceships are.

With a Canadian finally
having reached to the edge of
space thanks to our friends
the Yanks, it is reasonable
for me to whisper into my
five-year-old son’s ear: ‘‘You
can be a spaceship captain
someday and go to. other
worlds.”’

He nods thoughtfully. In-
deed, he is a child of the
Space Age. He knows 1015 all
quite true.

I kept him up the other
night to watch an hour-long
show about the history of the
Apollo moon program. Just
shortly before we reached the
footage of Neil Armstrong
finally setting down his boot
on lunar dust and muffing his
lines, my budding astronaut
fell asleep.

Oh hum. Sure, Daddy
Sure people can go to the
moon! Didn’t you know?
That's old history stulf.

1 have an older son, an
adult now. Back when he was
five, we were still waiting for
the big moment | kept him

up, too, to watch the eerily
flickering black and white
images from the moon as the
cameras beamed the adven-
ture back into our living
rooms.

My heart almost burst with
excitement, | recall. | was of

! can remember an uncle
spanking me when | was a
boy because | insisted that
men would land on Mars in
my lifetime. Heresey! The
kind of talk that could have
landed you at the stake in
medieval times

On the scale of things, we
are just leaving the Middle
Ages, remember. That's why
ws such a shock to run

Space cadets

That’s why il is so unnerving
to have nuclear weapons and
yet still be barely more than
primitive tribes, all of us.

The Bomb and the space-
ship. Death and flight.
Ultumate doom and ultimate
freedom. What a yin and
yang!

Recently, there has been a
surge of renewed interest in
the United States about a
manned trip to Mars. There
is talk about making it a joint
Russian-American project: as
a way of taking some of the
macho steam out of the arms
race and the political games-
manship.

Wuh the Olympics pro-
bably irreparably damaged as
a forum for international
competition, there aren’t too
many bear pits where the
contestants can indulge their
urge for nationalistic mud-
wrestling without risking a
Nuclear Winter for us all.

Ever since 1 can remember,
I wanted to be a space explor-
er. | think it ts an instinct
common to the human
species. At one level, it 1s as
simple as not keeping all your
eggs in one basket.

Sooner or later, this planet

look for avenues of escape
when the catastrophe comes,
be it a comet, a nova, or a
thermonuclear computer
accident. Scatter, kids! Run
for the hills!

I'm really happy a Cana-
dian ts finally about to get in-
to space. About bloody time!

It would be a wonderful
tollow-up at this stage if
Canadians could get behind a
push for something useful to
bring about peace, instead of
Just tugging at the cuffs of
the superpowers, nagging at
Te to be nice.
