48 - Wednesday, February 13, 1991 - North Shore News N. Shore groups will celebrate ‘Equality Eve’ NORTH SHORE women are join- ing with other women = across Canada in a special celebration this Valentine’s Day. It's the 10th anniversary of the largest mass movement of women in the history of Canada. On Feb. 14, 1981, 1,400 women descended upon Ottawa to fight for the en- shrinement of their rights in the proposed Charter of Rights. The result was Clause 28, which states that men and women are equal under the law. This clause affords Canadian women greater legal protection than is enjoyed by women in any other country in the world, including the United States, where American feminists have been engaged in an ongoing battle for similar protection since 1923. This year, ‘Equality Eve’’ is being marked with gatherings of women who will discuss the expe- tiences of Canadian women in society and share their visions for the future. “It’s a very grassroots kind of eclebration,’’ said Lynne Melcombe, coordinator of the North Shore Women’s Centre (NSWC). Local women, including members of the NSWC, North Shore Crisis Services Society, and the Mary Catherine Paterson organizing committee, will meet at 7:30 at the home of a North Shore feminist to mark the occasion. Interested women are invited to call the Faye Cooper at 985-0067 for more information. The NSWC, 103-145 W. 15th St... North Vancouver, is open Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Its telephore number is 984-6009; drop-in visitors are welcome.
