Natural gas for B.C. cars? VANCOUVER (UPC) - Cars could soon be running on compressed natural gas and the British Columbia government hopes to prove it in a three-month test, B.C. Science Minister Pat McGeer said Wednesday. McGeer told a news conference running vehicles on natural gas rather than just on conventional oil- derived gas would eliminate Canada's dependence on oil imports, now costing $16 million per day. “We have all the fuel requirements to operate personal transportdtion systems now and far into the . future if we only develop the technology to the point where we can use our own resources,” McGeer said. He said British Columbia has at least a 50-year natural gas supply. If every car in the province was converted to run on the fuel, it would require less than a 40- percent production increase and no new pipelines to Dundarave pect will be accepted ‘- for In addition to the usual gas station services, | will be offering complete mechanical service and repairs For customers’ convenience. ail major bank and oll company credit cards It's a new and better location with the same high quality automotive service Drop in and see me 2196 Marine Drive West Vancouver 4. 922-6624 Aintree C service them. A car and van have been converted to a duel fuel system - natural gas and conventional gasoline - for a three-month test. If it proves feasible, McGeer said, B.C. Hydro and the University of B.C. are considering con- verting their fleets to the system. Private cars could be converted in the future by adding two small storage tanks, a pressure regulator and several other small parts $1,500, or less if conversion kits are miass- produced. McGeer said compressed natural gas would be sold to service stations for about 6.6 cents per litre, compared to the current price for con- ventional gas of 17 cents per litre. While conventional gas- driven cars would have more power, natural gas-powered vehicles would produce less pollution and be safer and easier to start, he said. ‘‘Look for me at Pacific 66...’’ ..at 22nd and Marine Drive in West Vancouver I've purchased the Pacific 66 station at 2196 Marine Drive and on the 1 5th of April tl be moving there from the Chevron station at 25th and Marine Drive in My new station is a big, bright, easily accessible location that will feature the same courteous and reliable service that all my customers have learned to ex Terry Higgins arriage at Pacific 66 The Science Ministed noted New Zealand has already embarked on a program “that will even- tually see one-third of that country’s cars and trucks converted to natural gas.” Should the B.C. trial prove effective, McGeer said he would recommend the province lift all road taxes on natural gas and offer in- centives to private retailers to install natural gas by providing it at an economic rate. _ FREE. “JUNKCAR PICK-UP LIVINGSTON’S 24 HOUR 437-3063 B11-Wednesday, April 16, 1980 - North = News - TAYLORMOTIVE Is BCAA APPROVED HOME OF THE AUTOMOTIVE SPECIALISTS Qualified technicians in each field. The technological advances brought about through years of electronic engineering on aerospace vehicels are culminated in the design of this piece of test equipment. Fully automated testing and fault analysis by EEPA’s microcomputer pro- vides the operator with pin-point identification of the faulty system as well as the logical choice of the faulty component within the system. The EEPA advantage, in addition to. its diagnostic capability far above any other comparable analyzer, is that the unit is so readily adaptable to future automotive diagnostic requirements. EEPA can be updated by a simple program change to accommodate the latest changes in automotive design or year to year refinements. This diagnostic tool, performs extensive analysis of Chrysier Corporation automobiles, from the 1972 models through to the current 1980 North American built cars and trucks. MSAHNLSRVA How It Works The Electronic Engine Performance Analyzer (EEPA) is a microprocessor based system used for isolating and diagnosing vehicle engine problems and electrical malfunctions. in addition to providing a character display message, the EEPA is equip- ped with a printer to provide the operator or customer with a permanent record of the tests performed on the automobile’s systems. This printout is also useful in explaining maintenance requirements The EEPA reduces the human evaluation and decision-making process and provides user and customer satisfaction in a minimum of operating time. The EEPA provides consistency in trouble-shooting techniques and with periodic maintenance in- spections, vehicle repair costs can be held to a minimum Now available $94 95 NORTteRIDG PLYMOUTH CHRYSLER = 1177 MARINE DR.
