come my way as a result of
the résponse I gave to a
«letter a couple of weeks back
which concerned itself with
birth control. Readers may
remember the letter which
had come to the column
from a woman who stated
- that she was Catholic, the
mother of six, and not
wanting any more.

It. described the quandry

she feels herself to be in|

because of her desirs to be
loyal to the teachings of the
‘church and yet protect
herself from bringing more
children into the world. I am
convinced that my response
to her was inadequate.

I go along with almost all
of my reply to her, but am

aware I narrowed down the’

number of her alternatives to
@ degree that was not fair to
her, nor to the Catholic
church. That church is
offering guidance in
“alternatives to artificial
methods of birth control”,
as, indeed, are other
agencies, and professional
people and lay people.

To help put the matter in a
better perspective, there

QUESTION: I guess I have to
call myself somebody’s , mis-
-tress. It didn’t start that way.
At first it was just innocent
coffee-ing with a friendly
colleague in business. Then
it was launching and then,
very gradually, the whole
works.

He is a very respectable
and highly regarded family
man, happily married, he
says, and with four kids. If
I’m honest, Pve got to admit
that I have.really enjoyed my
relationship over these last
four years. We both under-
stand that neither of us wants
anything more than the
occasional, but fairly regualr
good times we spend to-
gether.

It sounds good but believe
me. it isn’t at all. I am really
fed up with continually being
careful not to be. ‘‘caught’’.
I’m fed up with being a sort
of stand-by, expected to be
on hand and fit in to his
availability and his frame of
mind. °

‘Even though we really are
very good friends, I can’t be
happy with my feeling that I
am just a very convenient
and discreet bedpartner,
when the ‘“‘regular’’ is, for
the moment, not his first
choice.

It has been enjoyable, but
Pve got to admit that I
sometimes feel I am degrad-
ing myself by agreeing to be
a *‘stand-by’’.
