grateful for the phone calls and the letters that have come my way as a result of the résponse I gave to a «letter a couple of weeks back which concerned itself with birth control. Readers may remember the letter which had come to the column from a woman who stated - that she was Catholic, the mother of six, and not wanting any more. = It. described the quandry she feels herself to be in| because of her desirs to be loyal to the teachings of the ‘church and yet protect herself from bringing more children into the world. I am convinced that my response to her was inadequate. I go along with almost all of my reply to her, but am aware I narrowed down the’ number of her alternatives to @ degree that was not fair to her, nor to the Catholic church. That church is offering guidance in “alternatives to artificial methods of birth control”, as, indeed, are other agencies, and professional people and lay people. To help put the matter in a better perspective, there follows a clipping and letters that have come my way from our readers. Let me add also, that all of the phone ‘cas I received were gracious and sensible and in _ fine spirit. NOTE FROM HS. I am Dear Mr. Stewart: am writing in response {0 the p lic mother of six who doés not want.to have any more children. I have some information that I would like _ to share with her and anyone who is interested in an alternative to artificial methods of birth control. J am talking about Natural - Family Planning. = The Catholic Church is supportive and en- very coura in the use of Natural Family P if used properly these methods can be -as_ effective in ' avoiding pregnancy as The Pill. They can also help couples achieve a pregnancy who are having difficulty doing so. I. should also mention that more and more doctors are referring their patients to teaching couples of these methods. — The two methods to choose from are: 1) The Billings Ovulation Method and 2) The Sympto-Thermal method. It is very important to Hote that neither of these is the rhythm method!!! Anyone interested in more _ information .can contact “Womb, BC” (ph. 936-4472) (Billings Ovulation), or, Serena, B.C. Dear Mr. Stewart: Further, to oar conversation this afternoon about your letter from the “good” Catholic lady, cutting from the most recent edition of the B.C. Catholic, _which indicates where birth- in- same control clinics § or formation about the are to be found. Most Catholic families _ receive a free copy of the Old problem of ‘the mistress’ QUESTION: I guess I have to call myself somebody’s , mis- -tress. It didn’t start that way. At first it was just innocent coffee-ing with a friendly colleague in business. Then it was launching and then, very gradually, the whole works. He is a very respectable and highly regarded family man, happily married, he says, and with four kids. If I’m honest, Pve got to admit that I have.really enjoyed my relationship over these last four years. We both under- stand that neither of us wants anything more than the occasional, but fairly regualr good times we spend to- gether. It sounds good but believe me. it isn’t at all. I am really fed up with continually being careful not to be. ‘‘caught’’. I’m fed up with being a sort of stand-by, expected to be on hand and fit in to his availability and his frame of mind. ° ‘Even though we really are very good friends, I can’t be happy with my feeling that I am just a very convenient and discreet bedpartner, when the ‘“‘regular’’ is, for the moment, not his first choice. It has been enjoyable, but Pve got to admit that I sometimes feel I am degrad- ing myself by agreeing to be a *‘stand-by’’. I am_ enclosing a. presentation - Ovulation-Billings itrol question these clinics are frequently advertised, plus articles are to be found in the paper. updating the readers on progress made in the field of -birth control. Most churches will also be only too happy to give anyone the necessary phone numbers, etc., they might need. 4 I know of several couples -some of them non-Catholic, who have used one or another of these two methods successfully. To my mind, a good Catholic must ' also be an informed one, especially in today’s world. NOTE FROM H.S. The following clipping was enclosed in the above letter. Will you continue to wish it on yourself, or may I assume. from your letter that you are about to create a new reality for yourself? I hope so because you were not created to be a ‘‘stand-by’’.
