Q. Our 12-year-old Chihua-
hua seems quite lively and
eats well but has a tickle in

take a swab from her throat?

A. Yes I could - but I would
prefer f6 do a_ physical

examination particularly of ©

the heart and lungs. Often
’ we find.in old dogs that one
of the heart valves béGomes
faulty causing a‘ backing up
of blood in the lungs and
this fluid results in the
chronic ‘soft cough’. An
alternative way of removing
this fluid is by activating the
kidneys a bit more and this is
‘accomplished with a simple
daily medication - now taken
by a great number of animals
- and even more humans.

Q. Our cat gags and chokes
and has difficulty in swallow-
ing and if we press her throat
- she starts coughing. What
should we do.

A. Lets hope you’ve already
consulted a veterinarian. The
cat probably has a piece of
foreign material lodged in
the throat or upper air
passages. In many cases,
particularly at this time of
year, cats will seek out
something green in_ the
garden to eat, If this happens
to be a piece of pampas grass
a piece will often lodge in the
throat, held there by the
rough spines on one side of
the blade. It is necessary to
give a genera) anaesthetic
and reach in with forceps to
disloge it. I've taken many
pieces out of cats — some
over five inches long.

Q. Should we give our dog
bones?

A. If you want to. Keep in
mind that bones would be
part of the‘ normal diet of
dogs in the wild state, but
they would be raw bones.
The latter are always prefer-
able to cooked ones - they are
spongy and chewy. Same-
times smaller bones will
lodge in the mouth or
esophagus (gullet), rarely in
the bowel and sometimes in
the rectum. Some dogs can’t
handle bones well and
develop diarrhea and vomit-
ing. Old dogs with enlarged
prostrate glands may
develop bowel impaction
with bones. Now you know
all this, make your own
decision.
