Does Collins remember the past? Dear Editor: As Doug Collins is hinting from time to time his intention of run- ning in the neat provincial elec- tion, it is fair game to take a deeper look into his past activities and writings. : A friend of mine suggested that 1 should. read his book P.C.W., describing. his escapes from Nazi prisons during the: Second World War. I did just ‘this and it. made for an interesting lecture. As a fugitive.from the camps, Collins always sought refuge in villages from- Poland to Yugoslavia and from Slovakia to.‘ Romania while surely aware of the ‘dangers facing those who weie helping | him. - : As he writes on page “a4, “we ; ‘had to be careful, for Poles found to be helping prisoners: would be *'shot.”” *We are never. told ‘whatever happened to the people who: pro- Extreme violence comes: tected Collins after he was recap- tured by the Germans, but the famous book The Great Escape by Paul Brickhill tells how the Czechs who helped escapees hounded by the Gestapo, firstly tortured, then killed. ” Even Collins realized the fate of such people after someone tried to hand him some bread and meat while in a cell in the Stalag. The unknown helper was snat- ched away by the Germans, and as Collins writes,. “his name was Ludovic, and what happened to him only God and the Germans know.” I was haunted for a while by the story of the young Yugoslavian girl who brought Collins and his companion to her miserable house and ‘hungry fooking’’ parents while German troops were only a few hundred yards away. They knew that if discovered the family would be summarily shot. On the other hand, the family right to our doorsteps “Dear Editor: A _ oc. In spite of their abject poverty and imminent peril, they chose to endanger their lives while saving Collins. . When | finished the book I wondered whether Doug Collins, while writing his poisonous com- menis against refugees coming to Canada, ever thinks about the people who helped fim 50 years ago. They probably never received commemorative medals, and some may have payed the ultimate price for helping Doug. { also wondered if he lately worries about that young Yugoslavian girl, probably a grandmother by now. She may be waiting in a cramped refugee camp for the chance of leaving her misery to come to a couiitry like Canada. ‘I remembered, however, how Collins writes about such people and realized that. words like. ‘‘hu- manity’’ and ‘‘gratitude’’ are never part of his vocabulary...and then I wondered no more. .
