A first violin with the Van- couver Symphony Orchestra, Matthews also brings exten- sive conducting and teaching experience to the North Shore orchestra. Educated tn Zurich and Geneva, he has spent most of his profes- sional life in British Colum- bia. He has been associated with the symphonies in Vic- toria and the Okanagan and is also a founding member of the Baroque Strings of Van- couver as well as the Rossini Strings. The North Shore group is ready for his professional touch. Under the direction of Peter Slemon of Capilano College, the orchestra has grown steadily over the last four years and now consists of over twenty strings. It is expected that Matthews will draw even more players. His teaching skill is apparent throughout rehearsals. Demands for work and im- proved performance increase rather than detract from the enjoyment of playing. Matthews is also keen to recruit some clarinets, oboes, flutes, maybe even a bas- soon. A woodwind section would enable the orchestra to increase its repertoire and in- clude some of the early sym- phonies. Interested winds should call John Matthews at 926-2885. The orchestra is working towards its first major public concert in the Spring. Rehearsals are on Wednesdays, 7:30-10:00 p.m. at Carson Graham Secondary School in North Vancouver, so if you want to play, come along, or if you are a listener watch for details of the up- coming concert. ens F.O.B.
