Democracy is
not democratic

Dear Editor:

Canada’s slide into
criminality and the loss of the
rule of law has been a long,
time coming.

It’s been facilitated by self-
serving politicians, lawyers,
judges, bureaucrats, and the
whole social engineering
industry.

Leo Knight’s description
(Sept. 1 Crime and
Punishment column) of the
corruption at the Canadian
Consulate in Hong Kong and
the coverup at RCMP" high
levels is another clear warning
call sounded by Mr. Knight
that we are nor just headed
toward banana republic status
— we have arrived.

How did we get here?

f grew up having the
utmost respect for all police
and Canadian law. ;

But now [ not only don’t
feel safe from. criminals, I
don’t feel safe from the police
or the justice system: | know
of too many personal storics
of the police acting like
tyrants toward innocent citi-
zens.

Evil individuals have
always existed and will always
exist, but when the agency
that society appoints to pro-
tect it from evil, is evil itself,
then no once is safe.

How can the police main-

tain their dignity and. self-
respeet when the courts make
fools of them, when their
hard, dangerous work is belit-
thed and urdone by a deliber-
ately convoluted, — unap-
proachable cabal of judges,
lawyers, immigration officials,
politicians, and social engi-
neers, all of whom benefit
from the corruption, cither
directly or indirectly?

Why stay honest when all
about vou are dishonest and
your honesty is pointless?

At bottom, the corruption
lies with a democratic system
that isn’t democratic because
it rests on. individual personal-
ity, and individuals are cor-
ruptible

If Canada had a system of
direct democracy, instead of
eiected, amoral, self-serving,
deal-cutting,  ego-secking
individuals, Canadians would
soon rid themselves of the
Charter — that pot of gold
for lawyers, judges, and crimi-
nals — would change the
immigration rules, and would
still generously look after the
people in our society who
truly do need looking after.

Until we rid ourselves of. -
the party political system, we
can expect to slide ever farther
into chaos.
