How about the whole thing, along with coffee and a good book at North Vancouver City’s new Piece of Cake dessert bar. Sunday; from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. Monday to Wednesday). Another newcomer. This one in the fabled Esplanade heritage building that housed the world’s first Keg and Cleaver. More recently it housed Nick Vavaris’ Nick’s Place Greek taverna, site of the Seven Years Neighborhood Pub War. Vavaris, as regular readers will know, eventually lost that titanic struggle and went gentle into the dining industry night. He left behind a restau- rant worn and frayed from years of fruitless struggle. it was in desperate need of revitalization. And a change of persona. A Piece of Cake, you say? Well, if you asked Greg, Ward, the man behind this new bakery, dessert empori- um and book store, the makeover was far from that, but the result is in striking contrast to Nick’s Place. Piece of Cake is as distant from a Greek taverna as is a British tea and crumpet par- lour. Its goal is to provide Lower Lonsdale residents with a civilized place to digest perhaps a slab of coconut macaroon cake with a steaming JJ Beans latte or a pot of Naomi’s Saltspring Island tea with a thick wedge of chocolate swirl cheese cake. It is to be a tranquil ort in the storm to imbibe ja dolce vita. A post-theatre retreat for the enjoyment of a dessert with coffee as +O or ice wine, And civilized it is. Gone is the cluttered crawling vine and Mediterranean bric-a- brae interior of its predeces- sor, In its place is an airy dining space reminiscent of a private men’s club, com- plete with gas fireplace sur- rounded by couches and other comfy chairs. The south end of the Cake is given over to shelves of books for perusal and purchase. Discreet halogen light- ing, mallard green furniture, trim and ceiling are com- bined with wood, terracotta and lighter clay tones. Service is deli style. Orders are taken over a long bakery/deli counter that sits atop a glass display case stocked with the Cake’s impressive baked goods. On the night Table Hopping visited, the selec- tion was limited, but there is promise of much more to come. Alcohol was not available during the department's visit, bur a stock of wine, beer and sclected liqueurs should be in place by the time you read this. That refreshment is sure to add another dimension to the Cake experience. It is still in its infancy, and Ward, a former mutual fund salesman and small business development advi- sor with Vancouver City Savings, is new to the dining trade, but he and the Cake offer a service that North Vancouver has long needed: a sophisticated dessert par- lour where relaxation, conversation and contempla- tion of the written word can be digested in equal por- tions. . The Cake celebrated its official grand opening on Feb. 13 to general applause and enthusiasm. Expect its hours of oper- ation to expand and the quality of che Cake’s dining experience to be fine-tuned as its customer base grows and its ownership’s market knowledge expands. . It is already a good plac to end an evening.
