Impressions:

Honda expects to sell a lot of Civics in
Canada this year. And, it appears they
have good reason. The all-new Civic
comes in three models: Hatchback,
Coupe and Sedan which Honda says
have improved ride, performance and
fuel economy over all predecessors. It
also has a more roomy interior. From
a styling standpoint, the front is the
biggest change with a grille
reminiscent of the Accord, and large
headlights. The hatchback model, built
in Alliston, Ont., is available in one
trim package only — the CX. It offers
most standard features including a
driver's-side airbag. A single option
package adds, among other
components, dua! airbags, AM/FM
Stereo and tachometer The sedan

Now in its second year of production,
the Odyssey represents Honda's
unique approach to the highly
competitive minivan market. Based on
the Accord platform, the Odyssey
features four hinged side doors, and a
third seat that folds into the floor,
leaving a flat surface. The middie row
bench or optional bucket seats, fold up
completely, or tie bench can be split
to provide one seat in the centre row.

Nissan designers took a cue from
Jeep — the first manutacturer to use a
uni-body design in a sport-utility —
and the result is a lighter and stiffer
body. This new found rigidity rises to
the occassion in the bush.

Other improvements to the new
Pathfinder include 10% more
horsepower (168 hp.), true shift-on-
the-fly four-wheel-drive, precise rack-
and-pinion steering and a smarter
suspension design.

Inside the spacy cabin of the new
Pathfinder designers have rearranged
the seating and dashboard
arrangements to create a more
sensible space for city and off-road
comfort. Extra room has also been
created by movirig the spare tire trom
the cargo area to under the rear.

Ten years may seem like a long tirne
for a redesign, but Nissan's new
Pathfinder was worth the wait.
