Dr. J: Chewing is a natural dog behav- four for dogs of all ages, but in pups 4 to 6 months old it is essential. From 16 weeks tc. 6 months of age, pups lose their baby teeth and get a full set of adult teeth. Teething pain prompts them to chew incessantly. Don’t scold your pup for chewing on an inappropriate item, simply take it away. At the same time give him an indestructible toy to chew on and then praise him. My pup's favorite chew toys are a length of rope knotted at each end (Booda Bone, Nylafloss}. a “Kong” (a rubber chew toy), and “Nylabone”. All these products are available at pet supply stores. | also recommend making “freezies” for your pup. Wet a cotton dish- ‘I cloth, roll it up, and freeze it. Let your pup chew on it while it thaws ~ the cold will help soothe his gums. Take it away before & completely thaws so he doesn't eat the cloth. Q:My cat penodically gets scabs on her |-- back. What is it? Dr. G: If you cat is free from fleas, it most likely has an allergy to something like pol- lens, molds, fungi, or house dust. When these “allergens” are inhaled, they enter the lungs, and travel via the bloodstream to the skin where they react with antibod- ies. This “allergic reaction” causes intense itching of the skin. Cats experiencing irritation will bite them- Selves until they bleed. Smail scabs soon form on the skin surface. Though it is not possible to prevent your cat from inhaling the allergens, the allergic cycle can be broken with medications (steroids). Cats can be given an injection of corti- sone or put on prednisone tablets, Cortisone works for 4 to 12 weeks. many cats have seasonal allergies so one injection is all they need each year. A few cats will need more than one treatment if the allergen persists in the environment for fonger than the effective period of the cortisone.
