After years of admiring thor-
oughbred Bordeaux, being cap-
tivated by cloned laboratory
cabernets from California and’
trolling the Chilean racks for mi-
raculous bargains from
prephylloxera stocks, one’s
tastebuds return like deranged
homing pigeons to the oft-
contested blood-soaked Tuscan
hills and the wines of Chianti,

Like the great Spanish reds, Chi-
anti “classico”’ riservas are
capable of a finesse and elegance
that rivals Bordeaux while retain-
ing just a hint of rusticity, so you
can drink them without assuming
the Wayne and Garth position on
your knees and chanting ‘We're
not worthy!” after every sip.

Composer Gituseppi Verdi would
drink nothing but Chianti and
plenty of it.

He got cranky when the best
suppliers couldn't keep up with his
demand for their top por-
tico-climber.

There’s a thesis on ‘The effects
of Chianti on Grand Opera” out
there wailing for some pixilated
musical scholar.

While there are a few “bouti-
que” Chianti available with
stratospheric price tags, you can
still get a damn fine bottle of what
warms a winter evening for under
$20.

Particularly good years for the
Tuscan elixir were 1988 and 1990
(1989 is “iffy’’s lean and tough),
so look to the low end for
bargains.

Ruffino’s flagship Riserva Ducale
1988 is a steal at $17.70, as is An-
tinori’s Classico Riserva 1988 at
$15.95,

Rocco Delle Macie’s Chianti
Classico 1990 is new to the
shelves, but fabulous at $13.45.

Buy as many as you can afford,
stick ‘em in a cool, dark place and
let it snow.
