Compare mattress with checklist IF YOU'RE not getting the deep, restful sleep you need to keep heaithy and happy, the culprit may be your mattress. To get a good night’s sleep, you need a mattress that meets your needs for comfort, support and space. Mattress condition checklist @ Is the cover soiled, stained or torn? @ Is the surface uneven? @ Does it sag around the edges or in the spot you usually lie? @ Is the surface of the box-spring uneven or sagging? @ Is the mattress comfortable in some places but not others? @ Do you hear creaks, crunches or other suspicious noises when you move? @ Does the bed wobble or sway when you turn over? @-Are your shoulders, hips or back sore when you get up in the moming? @ Do you and your partner roll together without meaning to? @ Are you fighting each other for space? @ Would you be embarrassed to show your bed, without covers, to the neighbors? @ Is your mattress eight to 10 years old? If you answered yes to eight or more of these questions, it’s time to think about a new mattress. After eight to 10 years of nightly use, even the best bed may be ready for retirement. Maiiress care tips With proper care, a good-quali- ty mattress will provide comfort and support for a long time. Use a washable quilted mattress pad to keep the mattress fresh and free from stains. Clean only by vacuuming; don’t use dry-cleaning chemicals or spot removers as they may be harmful to the fabric or underlying mate- rials. If you need to tackle a stain, Cap bridge gardens honored CAPILANO SUSPENSION Bridge was recently honored as the North Shove’s Best Large Commercial Garden for 1993. Receiving the award on behalf of Capilano Suspension Bridge was Carole Ballinger, whose com- pany, Capilano Pacific Planters, fas been involved in the planning of over 26,000 square feet of Capilano’ Suspension Bridge gardens, MacEachran, today’s gardens in- clude Elizabeth’s original thododendrons, hydrangeas and azaleas. Maintaining the gardens for the over half a million visitors who cross the world-famous bridge every year is no easy task. This summer the gardening staff was assisted by four Cleveland Elementary School students: Stacey Cunliffe, Karen Johansen, Carolyn Park and Laura Jamieson, who watered, pruned use mild soap with cold water and apply lightly without soaking the surface. Most mattress coverings (called the ticking) are not colorfast, and washing could distort or remove the color. Turn your mattress over and end-to-end every few months to equalize wear. Turn a new mat- tress every few weeks for the first two months. Never fold, roll or bend a coil mattress. When moving to another location, protect the mattress in a carton and flex it around corners. Don’t use the mattress handles to support the full weight of the mattress as they may pull cut and damage the fabric. The handles are for positioning the mattress on the foundation. Don’t put a board between the mattress and foundation; it makes the mattress wear out faster. And don’t let the kids use the bed for a trampoline; it damages the inner construction. Contrary to popular belief, it’s not illegal to remove the mattress tag, but it’s a good idea to leave it for identification in case you have a warranty claim.
