Not on- ly did Sydor pull away to win solo, but Pedal Racing Team’s Jill Smith of Vancouver came in just two seconds behind Matthes to take the bronze position. The heat was on for the feature finale — the cross-country event — as Sydor’s challengers were gunning for vindication. Sydor asserted the lead early in the final nine-mile lap, but was overtaken. Then she pulled steadi- ly away as the stage soon became a race for second-place honors. On the third and final lap, Susan de Mattei of California rode in for silver with a 30-second deficit, with Matthes 12 seconds further back. For Sydor’s sponsor, Team Kahlua Canada, it was the most successful launch of a major team in North American history. The new formation marks the first corporate-sponsored team in Ca- nadian women’s cycling. The team is made up of Sydor, Road World’s bronze medalist; Pan-Am sprint champion Tanya Dubnicoff of Winnipeg; former Tour de France yellow jersey holder Kelly-Ann Way of Wind- sor; and national team members Maria Hawkins of Banff and Lesley Tomlinson of North Van- couver.
