John Smart disappointed with freestyle showing LIONS BAY’S John Smart came in fifth in the freestyle skiing mogul event at Albertville last Thursday. Smart, considered by many to have had a good shot at an Olympic medal, was disappointed with his fifth-place finish. This was the first time moguls were given full medal status at the Olympics. Smart, 27, has been a member of Canada’s: World Cup team for two years, following the 13-event circuit in Europe. Smart had one world cup vic- tory in his first season and in January finished sixth at the Fibreglas Canada World Cup Freestyle held at Blackcomb Mountain. The winner of the Blackcomb competition, France’s Edgard Grospiron, picked up the gold at Albertville. Olympic silver went to Grospiron’s teammate Olivier Allamand and American Nelson Carmichael, who placed second at Blackcomb, won the bronze. During the Olympic competi- tion, Smart beat Canada’s number-one-ranked mogul skier Jean-Luc Brassard of Quebec, who came in seventh place. Set smaller goals within game to achieve results From page 15 munication, and so on. The mental aspects of the game are important no matter how often you play or what type of league or tournament (recreational or competitive) you play in. Each member of the curling team must take responsibility for a part in the shot: the thrower must concentrate on delivering the rock correctly, the sweepers on judging the weight and com- municating that to the skip, and the skip must think about the amount of ice and weight that are needed to complete a particular shot. If the thrower thinks too much about the outcome of the shot, the odds are the shot will be less successful. Also, everyone should try to block out external factors (such as problems at the office) which cause the team member to lose focus during a game. The winning formula for the team is ‘tone shot at a time, one end at a time, and one game at a time.”” The overall goal is to win, but it can only be accomplished by set- ting smaller goals within the game and within the competition.
