Joy Metcalfe JOY TELLS ALL THERE WAS quite a scramble at Vancouver In- ternational Airport last Thursday morning. Seems that our award-winning super rocker, Bryan Adams, was leaving for his tour of Australia and New Zealand and some of his ” fans spotted him walking through the airport. It was immediate pandemonium! My travelling spy, who was fly- ing off to Calgary, told me that he couldn’t get through the securi- ty checkline because the checkers were checking out Bryan! He was simply mobbed! Bryan was very gracious, though, signing autographs and pesing for pictures. Bryan’s agent, Bruce Allen, must have been a bit frustrated to hear about the ker- fuffle since he had iust dropped Bryan at the entrance to the air- port. Union at Jobn William's Pan Pacific Hotel last Friday evening. This was the gala Triple AAA Five Diamond Award evening and it vas the first time that the award ceremony has ever been held out- side of the United States. The evening began on a high note as the entire Vancouver Police Pipe Band brought everyone to their feet with the stirring music of the pipe and drums! Also impressive were several members of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police who looked quite dashing in their scarlet dress uniforms. The dinner was magnificent and the entertainment matched. Dal Richards and his band, vocalist Lorraine Foster, the Vancouver Welshmen’s choir, Ukrainian dance troup and a trio of drum- mers entertained superbly! This was an especially impor- tant evening for the three Van- couver Five Diamond Award reci- pients — the Four Seasons, Le Meridien and the Pan Pacific hotels and all their general man- agers and their staff. And it was certainly very posi- tive on Saturday night at the Hotel Vancouver as the Canadian Diabetes Association hosted their eighth annual Best Ball. The even- ing’s emcee was BCTV’s witty Barry Houlihan whose wife, Sally, fooked quite fetching in low-cut black and silver. Bal] chairman Patsy Hesrn, in a sleek sequined gown, kept everything moving smoothly. Best news of the affair is that the benefit dinner dance and auc- tion raised $70,000! Speaking of parties, there is always something very special about the annual Chinese New Year Party at Trader Vic’s, which is hosted by genial Jack Lew and his staff, and Dennis Foristal and Monica Hayes of the Westin Bayshore. It’s always warm, happy, in- viting and packed with media people! Pony-tailed Steven Wong, former restaurateur who's now doing a column for the Sun and CKNW talk show producer Shirley Stocker and her Henry were there. CFMIs Sterling Faux and his wife, Carol; Liz Carroll, who’s left the editor’s chair at The Elder Statesmen, but will continue as a travel and entertainment writer; J.J.
