Power Smart
lighting

The kind of lighting fixture
you select depends on what
you want it to do.

General lighting is usually
provided by floor and table
lamps, and by wall and ceil-
ing fixtures. Task lighting is
for specific activities such as
reading, cocking or sewing.

Security lighting lets us
move safely outside and
around our homes.
Decorative lighting — often
track lighting — accents or
highlights a painting, artwork
or architectural feature.

Fluorescents: more light,
longer life. Fluorescents are
suitable for most kinds of
lighting. They are available
as the common tube type or
as new Power Smart ‘“‘com-
pacts” which provide lighting
quality similar to
incandescents.

Their initial cost is higher
than chat of incandescents,
but they give out about four ~
times as much light per watt
and last up to 10 times as
long. So you don’t have to
change bulbs as frequently.

A Power Smart 34-watt
fluorescent tube provides the
same light as the older
40-watt’ version and uses less
energy. These are ideal for
laundry rooms, workshops,
garages, basements or
anywhere a lamp is on for a
long period of time (such as
in a kitchen or a centrally
located hallway).

A compact fluorescent uses
75% less energy to provide
upproximately the same light
as the higher-wattage in-
candescent it replaces. One
15-watt lamp produces the
same amount of light as one
60-watt incandescent bulb —
and lasts us to 10 times as
long. Colors look the same
too, creating a warm and ap-
pealing atmosphere.

Compacts can be used in
the same rooms and in some
of the same fixtures as in-
candescent bulbs.
