Six months in jail on weekends for prank

Terry Driedger. 28 of Burnaby,
received six months in jail to be
served on the weekends,

Driedger was one of five men
charged by police following a string
of pipe bomb explosions in North
Vancouver on Halloween two years
ago.

Driedger had placed his belong-
ings in storage apparently expecting
te spend some time in jail when he
showed up for sentencing in North
Vancouver provincia! court.

Two of his co-accused Michael
Chalmers, 20, and Ravinder Singh
Grewal, 23 were jailed six months
on Feb. 17 after each pleaded guilty
to five charges.

Driedger had pleaded guilty to
four charges.

Driedger was on probation for
possessing stolen property at the
time of the bombings.

His criminal record dates back to
. 1987 and includes youth and adult
convictions.

“Crown lawyer Mark Rowan had
‘asked for 10 to 12 months in jail, the
same sentenced he had asked for
Chalmers and Grewal.

Rowan pointed out that Driedger
was older than the other men
charged in the incidents and had a
“much more extensive (criminal)

© record.” '

“I'm opposed to intermittent
time,.He’s just not a perfect candi-
date for it,” said Rowan before Judge
Bill Rodgers made his decision.

During the Halloween bombings

A cheque for $1,500 restitution
was given to the court for Driedger’s
pant of the property damage.

ICBC was to get $350 of the
restitution, $585 was slated for the
municipality of North Vancouver
District and $465 was to go to Royal
Insurance.
